Soil

Clay loam on the elevated sections above the river, with the characteristic compaction issues of Beaver County inland properties. The elevated position means drainage is generally better than in the flat river terrace boroughs, but heavy clay still compacts readily without annual aeration.

Turf

Tall fescue is the standard grass type on most maintained residential lots. The borough's elevated position above the Ohio River means some properties on exposed slopes show heat and drought stress on fescue lawns during extended dry periods in July and August.

Climate

The elevated position above the river means slightly colder average temperatures than the river-level boroughs in winter. First frost mid-October is typical; green-up begins in mid-April. The elevated position also means more wind exposure than in the sheltered river valley.
